Gracie

Gracie will be 3 yrs old in July. These are recent pictures of her while we were hiking in East Granby this past weekend. She loved it. I didn't love it quite as much. For the first time in all these years of going there I didn't really have a good time. Turns out the place was rather over run by families that brought their kids. Ordinarily that is not a problem but this time it seemed like everyone brought kids that didn't want to be there or were determined to make the place their own personal war zone for entertainment purposes.

Over and over again I kept running into families with really rowdy kids; being loud; hitting each other with sticks; throwing rocks, etc. They were rather a nightmare and certainly not what I wanted to be around. Sometimes I could clearly HEAR these kids but not even see them because they were far enough away to be out of eyesight. I was very disappointed.
I go to the woods for peace and quiet; for exercise and to make sure my dog has a good life as well. But like so many times since Covid hit a few years ago, these places that I once used to travel alone or nearly alone are now well known by the local rabble (as I call them).

There was one bright spot while I was there. I met a very old man walking towards me on my way back out of the woods. I noticed him for two reasons....first of all because he looked to be VERY old, like shouldn't be going anywhere alone old, let alone be in the woods alone and secondly because although he looked very old the guy had a big smile on his face and he was really moving along very well for someone who looked that old! We said a few words to each other in passing and he kept that smile on his face the whole time and never broke stride either. Good for him! I hope he enjoyed his time in the woods.

I can't exactly put my finger on why but he made me feel so much better.

AirBNB Nightmare

105 Wagner Way, Tobyhanna Township, PA 18347

So every year we take a vacation of some kind with the family and our dogs. This year we were to stay at a nice place in New York State. I was really looking forward to it.

As luck would have it the renter contacted my son the day before our vacation was to start, telling him the place was double booked. This has never happened to us before but this renter admitted it’s happened to him before…..which mean he’s either an idiot that makes stupid mistakes at other people’s expense or he’s an idiot that just doesn’t know what he’s doing. In any case we will not be renting from him again.

We now had the option to all collectively change our vacation time (not possible) or stay home (come on!) or try to book another place at the last minute. We went for option 3 as the little kids were looking forward to this vacation and frankly so was I.

My son booked a place in Tobyhanna, PA.  You may be thinking that’s a weird town name….it made me think of our family cat Toby from when I was a kid. But it did turn out to be a real town. On line the house looked nice; listed all the things we would need including air conditioning which you may have noticed is essential this summer as we are experiencing 90 plus days with high humidity for weeks on end this year.

I packed my stuff; got the dog in the car and set off on my way to vacation!!

I got to the house first. I usually do as I don’t make any stops if I can help it or very few if I must stop. This time I did have to stop to use the bathroom at one of the rest areas. I was really nervous about it because Gracie was with me. I can’t just leave her in the car with the heat the way it is…..someone would smash a window to save her and I’d be arrested for sure. I’ve never had this issue before so I was very much undecided about what to do with her. Plus she’s a nervous dog to begin with….anything new happening to her and she’s very likely to freak out.  In the end I decided I’d walk her around at the rest area to let her pee and then I just took her in the ladies room stall with me! She did not understand what was going on and did her best to make sure I knew that……she had to be dragged into the stall with me. I used one of the handicap stalls and I was totally justified in doing so. It is definitely a handicap to have to drag an English Pointer into a stall with you; hang on to her leash the whole time; prevent her from going back under the stall door to get away; all while trying to pee on the toilet!

That done, I met a young lady on my way out. She was surprised to see the dog but seemed to like Gracie and Gracie likes everyone so it was fine. I told her I couldn’t very well leave the dog in a hot car so I just brought her with me. She seemed to think it made sense so that made me feel better. And we were back on the road again real quick.

So as I said, I got to the house first. I let Gracie out to sniff and pee and do doggie things that are fun after a long car ride. As I got up to the door I found a notice on the door handle. It was a shut off notice. This is not a good thing.

The notice was dated 7/19 and the date was 7/22 when I got there. This means to me that no one has seen this notice except me. Now I’m getting nervous….

I tried the code to open the door. It did not work. I took a quick walk around the property and I was not pleased by what I was seeing. The driveway was in such a state that it appeared to be reverting back to a wild state. The decorative wishing well and bench next to it in the front yard were both covered in years’ worth of moss and debris. The ‘lawn’ had not been mowed in a very long time. The grass and weeds were so tall they had given up trying to be upright and were laying down for the most part. The bushes along the front of the house were all over grown as well.

I got back in my car and called my son telling him I could not get in the door. They were about 15 mins out from the place and it was beginning to down pour so I just waiting in my car with Gracie. When they arrived Justin tried to get in the door….didn’t work for him either. He called AirBNB and was told by someone who was supposedly a maintenance man that we could get in by a side door. (this proved to be true as the door was not locked and the inner screen door with it was not even in its track as it was the wrong size to even fit that door way.

The notice on the door indicated that someone had not been paying their electricity bill and the place was about to be shut off. This is NOT the type of notice you want to see when arriving at a rental after a 3 ½ hour drive to get there. The adventure just got worse from there.

Once we were all inside with all our stuff (what option did we have but to go inside right?) it became obvious that many things advertised about the place were just not true at all! The first problem was that the hot was extremely hot. There was no air conditioning in the house; no central air; no window units, nothing. In fact the type of windows the house had made it impossible to put window units in the windows at all. All it had was a ceiling fan in the dining area that although it was on full force the entire time it did little other than move hot air around.

The third bedroom (that was to be mine) was in the basement area. The door was locked but somehow Kasey got it open and actually made the bed up as well. She should not have bothered. It was actually must cooler down there but the overwhelming stench of mold was so strong down there I could not sleep down there and instead I had to sleep on the couch, in the heat upstairs in the living room. Upon investigating the lower level further it was obvious that there had been some kind of water problem down there at some point because the drywall was all water damaged and the baseboards had been removed but nothing had been done from that point. I strongly suspect there is mold behind that drywall from the water damage. The stench was unbelievable!

Let me list for you here some of the other problems we found with the house immediately. There was no garbage bin; none of any kind in the house (we had an infant with us and dirty diapers that needed to be in a bin….none there. We ended up using one of our coolers with a garbage bag in it (we bought our own garbage bags as there were none of those in the house anywhere either) because without a garbage bin we needed something with a lid for smell and to keep the dogs out. There were no cleaning supplies at all other than a small half bottle of Dawn dish soap and a broom….no dust pan mind you….just a broom; no vacuum. There was almost nothing in the kitchen….the same kitchen that was advertised as having condiments and general cooking supplies….didn’t even have salt; pepper and cooking oil.

The bathroom had exactly 4 towels and 1 washcloth; no soap; no shampoo or conditioner; no garbage bin or bags; 2 rolls of toilet paper; no tub mat in the tub to prevent falls; nothing that normal rentals make available for their renters. The kids were bathed to cool them off. Mya ended up falling backwards while sitting in the tub and bumped her head pretty good…..because there was no mat in there to prevent it. The worse part of a vacation is having to drive to a store to buy essentials that are not provided with the rental and that’s exactly what had to be done as soon as we got there.

An email was written by the three of us that night and sent to AirBNB about the terrible condition of this house. More about their incompetency later….

I took the dog for a walk and found the ‘Pilgrim Lake’ just down the road a short way. This is no lake….it’s a swamp. I have no idea why it’s called a lake…it simply is not a lake unless it’s a lake for frogs; tadpoles; snakes and other wildlife that enjoys swamps. I never made it to the actually lake that was nearby as I simply couldn’t handle the heat and ended up leaving early.

That night was terrible for me; between the excessive heat; Zack’s little toenails clicking all over the house (Justin’s dog; he was probably too hot to settle down too); Gracie moving around trying to get comfortable; the hardness of the couch; lack of a pillow….the night just wore on with me awake thru most of it. I resolved to leave in the morning. I didn’t want to leave the family but this was a nightmare that I was just not prepared for and not able to handle.

I left in the morning and had a horrendous 4 ½ hour drive home. It was Saturday and for some reason the traffic was crazy the whole way home. I didn’t want to stop; I just wanted to get home. In fact I just kept chanting to myself I just want to go home; I just want to go home. My poor dog spent more time in the car than she did anywhere else.

The rest of the family stayed (not wanting to do that long drive with 3 kids and a dog again so soon) and did their best to enjoy their time there. They did visit fun places with the kids. The area is nice. It’s just the house that was so horrible.

To make things even worse when they got back home the ‘owner’ of the place had sent a bill for $300 to AirBNB that they wanted my son to pay. According to this owner (who has obviously not been to this nightmare home for a long time or maybe never) the side porch door was broken (yes, before we even got there moron! Your maintenance man told us how to get in that way); the screen door was broken (no, it was fine it just is the wrong size for that door idiot!); the kitchen stool was broken (a miracle or an act of incredible strength must have happened for this one because the chairs were metal and impossible to break even if we wanted to); the comforter in the mold room had to be replaced (they accused Zack of having peed on it and that it had to be replaced because of that. First of all Zack is far too small a dog to get up on that bed and even if anyone had peed on it there is no reason why it can’t be WASHED!); lastly they complained they needed to do a Deep Cleaning because we did not clean up well enough and there was dog hair in the house. Now that is just plain ridiculous. First of all yes, my dog sheds and I make a habit of vacuuming whenever I bring her anywhere to stay. I have two issues here….first of all there WAS NO VACUUM so I couldn’t clean up her hair and second of all since when is vacuuming considered Deep Cleaning???!!

Obviously the person renting this place is a shyster of the lowest order. We know that now. Unfortunately AirBNB did not handle the situation correctly or promptly and let it drag out far too long. Their customer service is a joke and after assuring us that they would handle the bill and we should just ignore it they allowed my son and his family to be continually harassed by the owner about paying the extended bill for basically lies they made up. I do believe that the owner made up issues to try to counter act the complaints we made and to obtain free money. It was very obvious (after we got there) that this house had been severely neglected for quite some time. Someone had bought it and was trying to make a quick buck by renting it without first having brought it up to basic living standards. They even went so far as to actually lie about the amenities in the house to capture unsuspecting people such as ourselves.

I am currently looking for further information so I can make a formal complaint to someone in authority in that town about that owner and AirBNB for not handling the situation properly and not screening the home/owner better than they did on this house. No one should have to go through what my family and I went through; have a vacation time ruined and then be harassed and lied to afterward.

Unfortunately I didn’t take pictures of all the issues with the house and I have not listed them all here either. Let this be a lesson to us all….it certainly is a lesson learned by my family. Always read the reviews about the rental you are looking to rent; also read reviews (if available) about the person renting it and AirBNB. And NEVER be the first person to rent any place anywhere no matter how nice it looks on line! The pictures I saw of the property I believe were from 2012 when the house was up for sale; way before this owner had it and did nothing to repair it.

Front of the house….overgrown bushes and plenty of natural debris.

Wishing well and bench in front yard. Sure wish they were nice!

My Brother Tom

My first playmate was my brother Tom. My earliest memories are of us marching around in a circle in the living room when Hogan’s Hero’s was coming on the tv. I also remember Tom and me beating up our giant teddy bears and having them take falls down the stairs after watching The Wild Wild West on tv.  We also played ‘army’ in the garden although I have to admit that really consisted of me watching Tom set up various scenes with his toy army trucks and those little green army men that the Toy Story movie has brought back into popularity in recent years.

He made up detailed back stories for the scene he was setting up and eventually it would end in one of the army men being lit on fire. That was to simulate the attack that he was describing. His scene was made realistic by stealing the lighter fluid Dad used to fill his lighter and some matches that could always be found in Dad’s desk. (Dad smoked cigars back then so these supplies were readily available and apparently he preferred matches but had the lighter also). Tom would douse the green guy (my name for them) and describe an action scene as he lit him on fire after the ‘attack’.  I was fascinated by the way the green guy would mostly melt when on fire. It looked very grotesque and I loved watching it. I have to note here that parental supervision back then was not what it is today but we all managed to survive our childhood regardless of some of the dangerous stuff we were doing.

Mom used to send us kids out with coffee cans that were half full of water and tell us to pick the Japanese Beetles off of the rose bushes. That would keep us occupied for quite some time as there was never a shortage of beetles on the bushes. (And incidentally those roses smelled so wonderful back in those days. Roses today often have no smell at all….such a pity) It was Tom that came up with the idea of throwing them in the brook to see what would happen. We didn’t know if beetles could swim or not but they never got a chance to even try. As soon as a beetle would plunk onto the surface of that brook a feisty little pumpkin seed fish would come straight up and eat it. We were thrilled and so were the fish! From that moment on we always threw the beetles into the brook and I swear those fish were waiting for them. Not one beetle survived and not one fish went away hungry.

When we were still pretty young and in grammar school I remember we would ride the school bus to and from school because we were too young to walk. There was an older boy on the bus that was destined to be a trouble maker for life; a born bully. He was older than Tom was and Tom was 2 yrs. older than me. This bigger boy started picking on me one day. I don’t know how it all got started but I know I hit him after he had done something to me and he returned fire by slapping me hard in the face. I was slumped down in the seat crying my eyes out but Tom jumped to my aid immediately and punched that rotten kid in the eye. That only made him angrier because Tom was too young to actually hurt him much or make a big enough impact to stop him. He was about to pound Tom into pieces when the bus driver realized what was going on and stopped the bus. He grabbed the bigger boy and hauled his sorry ass up to the front of the bus and chucked him in a seat. That was back in the days when adults in positions of authority (such as the bus driver) didn’t get in trouble for physically handling kids when they were bad. I don’t remember that boy being a problem anymore so he probably was kicked off the bus. However, the bus driver liked me and I got a giant lollipop from him the next day. That made a slap in the face seem not so bad after all but in reality Tom should have gotten a lollipop for coming to my rescue; instead he got the admiration of his younger sister.

As we got older Tom was still pretty much my only playmate. There were no girls in the neighborhood other than me so I hung out with all boys until I was about 11 yrs. old (and yes this was training for the Tom Boy I was to become, much to my mother’s dismay). The boys would build forts in the woods and say that no girls were allowed. I was the only girl around so that was directed at me. But Tom always let me in the forts when the other boys weren’t around. And I was suitably impressed by the skills these boys developed while building these forts. Some were made of tree limbs and were on the ground; some were made from scrap wood that Dad let them have and at least one fort was an underground fort in a pine forest we simply referred to as ‘the pines’. That one was not my favorite as it always made me feel claustrophobic when going inside and once inside it was always cold. They built a shelf area that was supposed to be for a fire but mostly it just backed up smoke into the fort.

But things weren’t always tons of fun with Tom. Every once in a while he’d think of something that he thought was fun that I did not think was so much fun. A good example of that would be when I was in a tube floating on the brook one summer day. Tom arrived on the shore some distance from me; there were others swimming in the water but I’m not sure exactly who they were now as that certainly was not my focus at the time. I was however, focused on the medium sized black snake that was suddenly air borne over my head and about to land in the tube with me. Tom had thrown the snake high into the air in my direction and yes it was a real live snake! That poor snake (I say poor snake because I’m sure it must have been just as scared as I was to find itself suddenly flying) landed in the tube with me and without a second thought I grabbed it and tossed it into the brook. The snake hit the water swimming as fast as it could in the direction of the opposite shore….smart move. Now I’m not going to say I wasn’t terrified of that snake; I was. That was evidenced by the yelling and screaming I did the entire time. But it was purely instinct that made me pick it up and toss it out. And luckily I caught it on the first grab. I can’t imagine what would have happened had it gone nuts trying to get out of the tube while I was going nuts trying to catch it. Strangely enough this little incident has been stored away in my mind as something funny. I’m sure it was funny as hell to see it happen but it wasn’t funny to me at the time. But those of you that have brothers surely know they tend to pull stunts like that on younger siblings from time to time.

Fast forward in time and we are young teenagers, old enough to start working tobacco. By this time Tom and I have a bond of equals but that does not mean he wouldn’t take advantage of a situation if it might turn out to be funny. (Funny at almost any expense was a common theme in my family) It was kind of understood in our family that if it’s funny, it’s not mean. That isn’t necessarily true at all…but that’s the way we thought. So sometimes I was the butt of the joke and sometimes he was. It all depended on who got who first.

Anyway, I remember tobacco as being the hardest job I ever worked but there was one year (I think my second year) it was even worse thanks to Tom. The boys always started working before the girls because they were doing suckering and twisting of the plants before the leaves were big enough for us to sew them. This one year Tom suggested I start working tobacco early so I could make more money. This was the best money an under aged kid could make in those days but it was hard work. So I went to work with him and mostly just boys worked early in the season but they’d hire just about anyone. I learned real quick it was a mistake. If I thought stacking the leaves and sewing was hard it was nothing compared to suckering and twisting. We either spent all day scooching on our butts in wet dirt suckering the plants or spent the day bent over at the waist twisting twine on each plant so it would grow straight. So it was scooch, sucker, scooch, sucker all the way done the row; turn and scooch, sucker, scooch, sucker all the way back….endlessly until you wanted to die. And then when the plants were bigger it was twist; step to next plant; twist; step; twist; step…never standing up straight for row after row all day long until you wanted to die. Tom had somehow managed to sell me on the idea of more money without mentioning the fact that the work was so much harder to do. I wanted to kill him my first day and I’m not sure how many days I actually lasted but I did not finish out that early session with him. I ended up stopping for a couple weeks and starting back up as a sewer in the barns where I had been the previous year. Lesson learned!

Eventually I began to get interested in boys for reasons other than to beat them up. I was quite good at beating the tar out of any boy that dared make me angry. And it was always such a delight to see the look on their faces when they realize they are being beaten by a girl. That phase of a girl’s life doesn’t last long. I call that the Amazon years…but I’m not sure it even lasts for years. I just know all girls will reach a point where they are no longer stronger than the boys. And I eventually reached a point where I was anticipating my first kiss. I assumed because Tom was older than me that he knew all about such things so I turned to him for help. I asked him how to kiss. He gave me some kind of lame advice that I no longer remember but it did register as lame even at the time. I eventually progressed to practicing kissing on the mirror in the living room. This angered my mother to no end when she found kiss prints on that mirror. Ha Ha (I never admitted to it either although I suppose I just let the cat out of the bag here)

Eventually I had my first kiss. It was a disappointment of course. The boy (who I later married and divorced) was no more experienced than I was but made a point of telling the neighborhood kids that I kiss like cardboard. Yes, he was a moron trying to cover the fact that he didn’t know what he was doing either. And then about 2 months later Tom actually came to me to ask ME how to kiss!  I now knew he wasn’t any more experienced than I was. And yes, I gave him equally lame advice and sent him on his way. Isn’t that what sisters were for?

Fast forward again and we are older teens now. I was driving by this time and had my own car so I was probably 16 yrs. old. Tom would have been around 18 yrs. old. I remember pulling into the yard with my light blue Toyota and as I was getting out of the car I could hear a police siren in the distance. I didn’t think too much of it but I did notice it sounded like it was getting closer; probably going to be coming by our house. I can also hear what sounds like a motorcycle coming down the road, getting close. As I turned towards the sound I see my brother Tom come whipping down the street; cuts sharply into the yard; riding across the yard. He looks at me and yells out ‘you didn’t see me’ and he’s gone in the blink of an eye across the yard; up a set of stairs in the back, and on up into the woods beyond our yard. Now I’m not understanding anything that is going on at this point and I didn’t get much of a chance to figure it out either because it seemed like a split second went by and there was suddenly a cruiser in our driveway with a very agitated cop getting out of it. He immediately asked me if I saw someone on a motorcycle come thru here. I looked him straight in the face and said no. At this point I’m now fully aware that Tom was being chased by this cop because he was riding that bike (probably not registered) on the road. I don’t remember which cop it was but coming from a small town we knew them all and liked almost none of them. They used to routinely harass us teens for hanging around up in the center of town. I was not about to be helpful to this cop that’s for sure.

Then my Dad came out of the house. He asked the cop what is going on and the cop tells him he was chasing a young man on a motorcycle and is sure he pulled in our yard. Dad looked at me and said did you see anything and I said nope, didn’t see anything. I just pulled into the yard myself; just got here. The cop did not believe a word of it but Dad just insisted there was no one on a motorcycle here so eventually the cop had to leave empty handed. Moments later Tom comes out from around the back of the house. If he had waited until Dad had gone inside all would have been just ducky. He did not.

Dad took one look at Tom with that guilt written all over his face and turned to me and said you LIED to me! He was really mad! I said yes, I did. He’s my brother, of course I lied for him. Dad was still very angry that he had been made to look foolish lying to the cop but he turned and walked away. I counted myself lucky that he didn’t do anything about it or at least I didn’t get in any trouble. I don’t know what he did to Tom or if he did anything at all. But to this day I still think I did the right thing.

Time moved forward and Tom and I grew up….actually became adults and started doing adult things like dating; going to parties and eventually getting married. Tom and I were pretty tight thru all of it. His friends became my friends and my friends became his friends as well. But life moves forward and brings changes with it. We both started having children and had jobs and spouses that took up most of our time. We did meet at Mom and Dad’s house on weekends for cook outs and general hanging out with whoever showed up and most holidays. It was a different relationship but we were still close. We would still call each other by our nicknames and tease each other about whatever may have been going on in our lives at the time. Life was really good at this point even though everyone in the family had been growing up and heading off to live their own lives. I always felt like I could talk to Tom about anything and I’m sure he felt the same way about me.

I think the tendency to take people and events for granted is just a part of life. We all do it….live and enjoy ourselves with never a thought about what may be coming down the road. We have to live that way don’t we? If we didn’t; if we always kept an eye towards the future we’d be missing something in the present. So when Tom told us he had pancreatic cancer it was a shock. Even after Dad’s stroke and eventual death years before, I never stopped to consider anyone else will die. And for some yet unexplained reason I’ve always expected all of us siblings to die in the order of our ages….meaning the oldest goes first and then the next born and on and on. I know that’s stupid…..really, stupid. But that’s what was in my head.  So it shocked me and I bottled it up. After talking to Tom about it I decided I would try to be as ‘normal’ as possible with him and not break down.

I had already lived thru a very close friend dying of lung cancer. She told me there was nothing worse than having people cry when they saw her. I never cried in front of her and I saw her or talked to her every day until she died. I decided I would do the same for Tom.

Tom lived an hour away from me and he was very reluctant to see people due to how he was feeling and probably just plain fear. Physical visits between us were not many and not often. But we did talk on the phone and there were almost constant emails between us for as long as possible.

I can’t give you a description of the almost 2 years Tom had while he was sick. It’s too painful and it’s not the part of him that I want to remember. I prefer to remember him as my first and best playmate; my defender; my partner in crime and co-conspirator in pranks against the unsuspecting. But eventually the end did come for him. It was hardest on him I think because he was trying to protect the rest of us from seeing just how much pain he was in and from how bad he looked as the cancer ripped through his body. Only a few were allowed in the hospital room with him while he died. I was not one of them.

For a while I was kicking myself for not just going to the hospital and saying the hell with his wishes, I want to be with him before he goes. But now I’m glad I didn’t do that. I was spared the anguish of watching my brother die by inches; I didn’t have to see up close what the cancer had done to him and he spared me the terrible memory of all of that.

During his wake I was afraid I was going to be expected to go up and view the body. I refused to do it. I did it for my Dad and regretted it for years. I was not about to view my brother dead and then have that picture in my head for the rest of my life. Perhaps I’m a coward, I don’t know. But I’m glad I didn’t go up to say my farewell to Tom. As far as I’m concerned he was already gone and the viewing of the body is just a formality that people do for the family and friends to have closure. I didn’t need it.

I am now as I was then, fully aware that I lost my partner in crime; my co-conspirator; my first playmate and defender. Siblings hold a unique spot in your life as they are the ones that experience and shape your life and their own from the beginning.  They aren’t your parent but they will sometimes protect you. They aren’t the same as your friends but they are there when you need them. And I think perhaps the most important part is the shared memories. They are the ones that can make you suddenly remember something funny or crazy that happened when you were young…and it comes back so vividly, like you are there again….and they remember it too and you laugh all over again about that fun time in your life. No one else can do that like a sibling.

I will always miss you, Tom. You were everything to a little girl who had only her big brother to play with for so long and you made it a really great time. Thank you for being everything you were to me.

Welcome to the Pandemic

Welcome friends, welcome. Find a seat and make yourself comfortable. You’re going to be here longer than you think and you’ll probably be more uncomfortable than you expected. But maybe we can find a way to amuse ourselves just a little bit. Let’s see….read on.

This is my first pandemic so if I’m doing something wrong or look a little awkward while I go about it, well… try to cut me some slack. I’m sure it gets better from here. It certainly can’t get any worse….I hope.

I say this is my first pandemic because that’s what it is and if some of the articles I’ve read are correct, this one is a late arrival. And by that I mean, according to some of the experts a pandemic was thought of more like when will it get here rather than if it will get here. In other words we were spoiling for a pandemic for a long time and it’s finally arrived. Well even if the scientific community was expecting it…..I still feel like I was bitch slapped by Covid19.

So let’s go over the sequence of events shall we? In late winter or very early spring I was enjoying a visit to New Hampshire to see the Ice Castles with my family. (A marvelous place that I highly recommend by the way) When I got back to work there was much talk about this virus and how it was getting serious. Up until this point I had heard about it but didn’t think it had much to do with me. Turned out I was wrong about that. I’d say it was less than 2 weeks later I was having a conversation with my manager and he was ‘suggesting’ I not come to work anymore for a while…due to my age and possible vulnerability to this virus. (I was not offended in the least by this conversation as I know how old I am and I assume the virus knows too.) I told him I’d think about it and went back to my desk. If I remember correctly I finished out the week and stayed home after that waiting for the company to find a way for me to work from home. (My sister had already opted to stay home before I made that choice.)That turned out to be a lot longer wait than I had expected and one that I later found out ate up all my vacation time. This did not please me and I still am not ok with it but I decided what vacation time was already approved I would still be taking…..pay me or not, I’m taking my vacation. (The dammit is implied here)

Here it is now nearly 9 months later and I’m still working from home. The company has officially moved us to a new building (this was in the works before the virus hit) but only a skeleton crew actually works there currently. (Are you picturing skeletons at desks or is that just me?) I’ve run the emotional gamut with this virus and work. I started out mildly irritated which moved quickly to mild concern. That blossomed in no time to great concern and much research on how to actually best protect myself from the virus. I’ve learned a set of rules that I follow like a religion (those that know me know that is huge as I don’t follow a religion at all) in all instances when I’ve had to leave the house. There is a homemade sanitizing spray (with a great deal of alcohol in it) that travels in my car with me; spare masks for myself and anyone else that may need one; a protocol that is embedded in my head for grocery shopping and any other stops that require going into a building where other people are. It has become a way of life but it is still not comfortable. I still catch myself forgetting my mask sometimes and I still feel like I can’t breathe when I’m wearing it. But I wear it and I put up with the lower half of my face sweating and breaking out (mask acne I think they call that).

In the midst of all this chaos and worry they have started re-opening businesses and schools. Some states (I refer to them ungraciously as The Moron States) have not taken the recommended precautions suggested by the Center for Disease Control….they are paying the price. There have been huge surges of the virus in these states and most if not all have had to shut down again or severely cut back the reopening they were doing. One state that just persists in being ‘moronic’ is Florida. At one point it had the highest rate of infection; they didn’t shut down the beaches during spring break so we all know how that played out; and they are currently in the process of re-opening with no safe guards in place. It’s like they are being purposely stupid!

Now I understand that we must get back to work; we must try to reclaim as normal a life as we can; we must get the economy back functioning as soon as possible and we must at least try to get our schools up and running as well. But to do that we also must pay attention to the CDC and it’s instructions; the lessons learned by trial and error and most of all common sense, which I want to believe most people have but I know there are many that simply don’t. So there are many ignorant people out there that suddenly have a voice because they have become ‘news worthy’. They are rebelling against wearing masks; they attack innocent workers that try to enforce their companies rule of no mask no entry; they have mass demonstrations against mask wearing……and inevitably some get sick and then have to be taken care of in the already over run hospitals, by overworked and severely stressed hospital personnel. This is a cycle of ignorance at a level that is simply shocking and deeply disturbing to me.

Prior to this pandemic I truly felt that most people I met were ‘like me’ or at the very least that we could always find a common ground. I no longer feel that way at all. Now I find myself emotionally suiting up for possible battle every time I have to venture out into the world. I’m wearing my mask; I’ve got my ‘to do’ list in hand and my mind is alert and watching for anyone that may look like potential trouble in any form. Am I over reacting? Maybe. But now that I see clearly that there are many truly ignorant and violent people out there I am no longer willing to give everyone the friendly benefit of the doubt. I hold myself ready or as ready as I can be for any possible signs of trouble….to avoid it; to run from it; and if need be to  involve myself to protect myself or someone else. I am not brave. I am not tough. I am not Wonder Woman. Only my grand-kids think I’m cool. But I’m trying to be at the ready.

We are currently reaching the end of the year 2020. And at the same time we are in the midst of the second surge of the Corona Virus…..as predicted by the CDC in the early spring when this all started getting out of control. There are two new vaccines that have been developed to fight the virus. They are currently in the beginning stages of giving it to people in key positions in society. Some people don’t agree with any politician being among the first to get the vaccine (which is happening); I have no problem with that. First of all they are essential for decision making for the rest of us (be that good or bad decisions they are making) and second of all they are for the most part being guinea pigged like the rest of us…..I find that idea very appealing. Let them go first and I’ll stand by watching to see how it goes. I get a certain piece of mind for NOT being one of the first to get the vaccine. At the first sign of anyone growing a third eye I’m stepping out of line; thanks but no thanks.

Both vaccines being offered do come with the possibility of some side effects. I’ve read and officials are now stating, that the required second shot is when you would get the side effects if any are to be felt. I am ok with that too…..better to get a much watered down version (my description…not official in any way) of the virus than to get the actual virus I think. Besides, what choices do we really have here? Of course there are anti-vaccine people out there that are refusing to even consider taking the shots. I’m not sure what will be done about them if anything. (Although I’ve read somewhere that the vaccine can be forced on people by state decision and it has been done in the past.)  In fact for some time long ago I was one of them. I am no longer in that camp. I believe vaccines are necessary for the life we live now and we’re lucky to have them. However, I will admit to some trepidation with these vaccines only because they were developed and issued so quickly…..one hopes that no corners were cut in the process. On the other hand, I feel it’s worth the risk for most of us. The last number of deaths from Corona virus in the US that I’ve seen is at 332,246 and the number of cases is at 19,055,869. In the last seven days (at the time of this writing) there have been 9,961 new cases and 162 deaths reported in CT alone.

In comparison the Moron State (if you remember that’s Florida) has had 68,726 reported new cases in the last seven days and 98 deaths. This information is on the CDC website and is updated daily. It appears that every state has been effected by this virus with varying results depending on how the citizens have responded to protect themselves; how quickly officials have set up protocols and how well they have been enforced. The state with the least amount of cases daily and overall appears to be Hawaii. I’ve always wanted to visit Hawaii…..maybe when this is all behind us.

The Tag Sale 2014

September 17, 2014 – I held a tag sale. This is my Face Book post about that day.

So...I held a rather crappy tag sale today. Lots of people stopped by because I live on a busy street. Lots of elderly people....lots of elderly people that want to pay less than a dollar for every damn thing under the sun. (And in this case I do mean under the sun. It was hot out there today!). I don't know about you but when an item is marked as $2 and its clearly an item that is normally sold for much more ( I was pricing everything to get rid of it quickly) and is in nearly pristine condition, I am not inclined to ask 'will you take $1?'. This is not so of 99% of the elderly people that wobbled and tottered their way from their cars to my sale...often from their big shiny SUV's and brand new LDT's.

And on the other end of the scale you have the bottom feeders. They show up with an army of unruly kids that immediately make themselves at home touching everything; while their parents inspect each item as if they were doing research on it; then decide on a few small (cheapest) items and try to pay for some but not all of the items they are walking to their car holding. When I tell them they owe me for each item they do the little confused dance of 'gee I thought it was a two for deal' or 'I didn't know it was that much' (we're talking the difference of a dollar here)...all the while not realizing that I recognize a rehearsed skit when I see it...and I wait for the extra crumbled dollar to be dug out of that pocket...with a smile on my face the whole time. We dropped our prices to try to appease the people that were showing up....it didn't seem to matter. No matter how low the price was they always wanted it lower.

And then the slowest, most unsteady old lady showed up...and she stayed. Oh she made a show of looking at things; asked the price on an item or two and then made herself comfortable on the step next to me and proceeded to tell us all about herself....her son that she hasn't seen in 20 yrs; his cancer; her knee surgery (pulled up her pant leg to show us her scar); the two books she has written; the fact that she's been on TV more than once; recited poem after poem after poem that she wrote ( from those books don't ya know) and topped it off by badgering potential customers that they have to buy our Halloween masks (regardless of what they may have come looking for) to the point where I'm sure they thought she 'was with us' and I was wishing she was somewhere else!

TWO HOURS later (I am not exaggerating) she is finally ready to go...but not before having me help her to her car so she can hobble back up to my house to show us her two books. And in between the pages of those books are many photos, all of which must be viewed, explained and admired. Until we came upon a particular photo that Bunny (my sister) and I recognized immediately. It was a picture of the Hog Hollow Hooters...a small band of mature people that used to perform their 'music' using trash can lids (symbols); coffee cans with beans in it (maracas); an old fashioned wash tub upside down (base) and other various items, while performing on the back of a flatbed truck in parades among other places. Both Bunny and I had spent some time in this band as teenagers filling in for members that couldn't be there. This was all brought to us by my mother, who was in 'cahoots' with these people for years while doing all the Lions Club shows, etc. So we both said that's the Hog Hollow Hooters! And it turns out that our guest knows Mom and they were in the band together.

Small world exclamations were made and we all had a good laugh. Then she toddled off to her car to finally head home....no doubt very happy that she spent her day quoting her poems; telling story after story; sharing old photos of her life...and all the while she had a captured audience and it didn't cost her a penny! Well played old lady...well played!

Dad's Cup

As far back as I can remember there was always a coffee cup on the kitchen table when I was growing up. That cup belong to Dad. I don’t mean to imply that he had a favorite cup; he didn’t. But whatever cup he may be using at any given time was always sitting on the kitchen table at his spot. Yes, he had a spot that was his too. It was Dad’s chair; at Dad’s spot at the table and at that spot was of course his cup. That cup would remain there, being used every day until one of us (usually Mom I assume or possibly myself, but mostly Mom) would remove it to be washed. Somehow another cup would magically appear and that cup would become Dad’s cup until it too was removed to be washed. And the cycle would continue. But the important part was that his cup was always there.

Another important aspect to Dad’s spot is that no one sat there but him. I can’t recall anyone beyond the age of 5 (little ones were excused from unspoken rules as were all the grandchildren) ever sitting in Dad’s chair until of course I did when I was a teenager. Sounds silly to put the thought to paper but that spot was his alone and basically left always available to him no matter what. That is of course until I decided somewhere along the way that I could sit there when Dad was not home. And I did. And no one objected. So I continued to do so forever.

It became the favorite spot for me in the kitchen and the only place I would sit if Dad were not home. Many, many years later now that Dad is gone it is still his spot in my mind and will always remain so. I still prefer to sit there but it feels different now so sometimes I will opted to sit in a different place.

Dad was a milkman…much like the old fashioned version of a milkman that may come to mind when you hear the word. That guy that most people don’t remember bringing milk to their homes… only Dad didn’t do home delivery. He delivered milk to schools and stores or at least that’s what I remember of his job (that and that he would sometimes bring home 10 gallon tubs of ice cream for us!).  And being a milkman meant that he was getting up and going to work when most people were still sound asleep in their beds.

When we were very young he would always make the rounds when he woke at 2am; checking on his little sleeping chicks; covering up the chilly little bodies where blankets had slipped off; turning off the forgotten light that may have been left on. I remember waking sometimes; not fully awake but enough to know I was now warm and comfortable where just moments before I was starting to surface from feeling the chill. (It seems like growing up in that house there were always cold drafts) I have a faded memory of times I’d hear his movements through the house; muted and comforting to know Dad was there. Sometimes I’d hear him leave my room and I’d just crack an eye open slightly to see his silhouette as he left my room or I’d hear a slight scraping as he pulled out his chair in the kitchen and sat at the table. Mom would have left him a sandwich for his breakfast and of course coffee in the pot. Dad had a real thing for coffee in those days but who wouldn’t if you had to start your day at 2 am?

It never occurred to me how lonely a routine he had waking each day and leaving long before anyone else was awake. I was fortunate enough to be raised feeling safe and secure and unfortunately with that came a kind of selfishness that was unintentional for sure but there none the less. I just didn’t take into consideration how much Dad did for all of us. At least not until I was a quite a bit older.

There were a few times I remember getting up when I heard Dad. I’d go down to the kitchen and sit with him while he ate his sandwich and drank his coffee. I don’t remember what we talked about. I’m sure it wasn’t anything important. It was more the quiet contact with him that was important to me. I wanted to be with him on my own; to have a personal connection to this wonderful father that did so much for all of us and got so little back really. He never asked for anything from any of us other than we be the best we could be. And even that was only just something that was understood….he never actually said it. He really just expected it.

So I’d come down in the dark, being as quiet as possible and join Dad in the kitchen. He’d ask why I’m up and I’d say something like I don’t know or I had to pee. I remember listening to the coffee perk in the pot and watching him eat. I’d curl my legs up under me on that hard wooden kitchen chair in an attempt to warm my freezing feet. And when he was ready to leave he’d tell me I should get back to bed and sometimes he’d kiss me on the head before he headed out. I never knew if those moments had any meaning to him but they certainly did for me. I hope I wasn’t intruding on his personal quiet time but if I was he never let it show. I miss those times. They were a time of innocence and safety when the world had not been allowed into our lives fully yet. It was a good time.

Little memories like this will surface sometimes out of nowhere and I’m glad they do. It’s made me realize I am my father’s daughter; that I do the same thing at my own house. I have a cup that is mine; in my spot on the counter. I use that cup for my tea (sorry Dad I never took to coffee like you did) for days on end until it needs washing. Then it gets replaced by another cup and the cycle repeats endlessly. I have a spot at the kitchen table that is mine too. It’s my chair and pretty much the only spot I sit in while in the kitchen. There is a tiny difference with the cups I use however. My cups mean something to me. Most of them are mementos of places I’ve been with friends and family; some of them were created by artists at pottery places and all of them have to be large enough to hold a goodly amount of tea to satisfy me. I really like my cups and in fact have far too many to use but I’ll keep buying them just the same.

It was while I was drinking tea at work the other day and letting my mind wander a bit, that I suddenly realized I do the same thing my Dad used to do. The whole cup and spot in the kitchen are offshoots from Dad’s routine that I’ve made into my own. It made me happy and a little sad to realize this. I have carried on a habit of my Dad’s without even knowing I was doing it. That may seem odd to others but for me it means more than I can ever explain.

According To Shay

According to Shay –   (about 2 or 3 yrs. old)

After visiting with grandma (me) for a while it was time to take Shay back home. Getting her ready for bed includes getting pj’s on; taking one last pee before bed and brushing her teeth. Standing on her stool in front of the sink getting her toothbrush ready this is the conversation that we had.

‘Where is your toothbrush Shay’?

‘I’ll get it’ she says.

Upon opening the medicine cabinet I see her brush is right there standing on its suction cup end (a brilliant idea for whoever invented that option by the way).
She reaches for it and I reach for her toothpaste next to it. I put a small amount on her brush and she says ‘Don’t help me’ and starts brushing her teeth.
She’s actually quite good at doing her teeth so I’m just watching her and I noticed what looks like a bottle of some kind of liquid soap on the sink but I don’t have my cheater glasses on so I can’t really tell what it is.

‘What is that?’ I say. ‘Soap?’

‘No. That’s sunscream’ says Shay.

‘What is it??’

‘Sunscream.’

‘You mean the stuff mommy puts on you before you go to the beach; so you don’t get a burn?’

‘Yes, sunscream.’

‘I never used that before, Shay. What is it called again?’

‘It’s sunscream Grandma. It goes on your skin.’ She rinses her brush and calmly continues to brush every tooth in her head.

I think we’re going to have fun on our vacation this year. We’re going to the beach and everyone will be needing plenty of sunscream at the beach!   J

Somersville Mill Trail

When the Somersville Mill burned to the ground some years ago they eventually cleared the area completely and created a trail thru the woods along the river area. Last winter I walked the other side of the river looking for the trail only to realize I was on the wrong side of the river.

Today I found the trail and followed it to a point and turned to come back the way I started.

I turned back when I came across a very healthy looking man in a wife beater t-shirt with a machete, hacking away at overgrown bushes. Not sure of how to handle the situation (it's not every day you meet someone with a machete in the woods!), I lamely asked if he was clearing the trail (what exactly DO you say to a stranger with a machete?). He barked back at me yes, do you want to help?

I did a quick calculation in my head: unknown man with machete; very fit with well muscled arms; wearing a wife beater t-shirt (ok, it's just called that but still...); voice sounds a bit angry....naw, don't think so mate (my inner voice became Australian for some reason). I had my dog of course (10 yrs old and more ornamental than anything else); a personal alarm around my neck (makes an ear splitting noise when activated but his machete wins that debate) and a message left at home telling where I had gone and what time I left (very useful for body recovery mission at best).

I turned around and went back the way I came. And no, I did not chance taking his picture before I left. He did not seem the type to take that lightly. P.S. He did a wonderful job clearing the trail.
